If you love pretty things, there’rs a good chance you remember jessie + mark’s gorgeous wedding that we shot back in june. I’m happy to report that it was published today by Rock n’ Roll Bride.

Rock n, Roll Bride is one of our personal favorite wedding blogs.  I love the philosophy that kat is putting out in the world:  Do your wedding your own way.  It’s how amy and I did our wedding, and it’s how we think weddings should be done.  Be as traditional or non-traditional as you want, as long as you’re doing exactly what you want to do, and not something you feel like you have to do.  Not to mention her blog is stuffed full of amazing photography from all over the world.

So we’re deeply honored that she featured a wedding we photographed.  Deeply honored and maybe a little giddy.  We’ll be having champagne with our editing today.

Head on over to Rock n, Roll Bride and check it out!  Then have a glass of champagne with us.

happy wednesday, indeed.

In April, Luke Jerram‘s amazing international art project Play Me I’m Yours came through Austin. 14 pianos were placed all around the downtown Austin area, out in parks, streets, and public squares for anyone to play, at any time. It was a wonderful, wonderful project. I can’t tell you how many times in April I walked by one of these pianos, and every time there someone playing. Everything from a Liszt Hungarian Rhapsody, to jazz, to small children tapping out Chopsticks and Heart and Soul.

The project was just too good to pass up. So our good friends Carla and Joel of Revel didn’t. On the last weekend of the installation, Revel and some of their buddies performed a concert on the Pfluger Pedestrian Bridge in downtown Austin. I was lucky enough to be there for it, cammy in hand.

So we get wind in Austin almost never. A breeze here and there, and you know, tornadoes now and again. But just wind for the sake of wind, it’s a rare occurrence. But it occurred on this day. Music, music stands, hair. It was all blown to smithereens. So After a few numbers up on the bridge, the guys relocated to one of the other pianos just down the trail, in an area a bit more protected from the elements. The audience they picked up came along. We were treated to a little Brahms, a little Bohemian Rhapsody. It was pretty much perfect.

Oh Nate, please tell me you had to play on at least one of the pianos, that your fingers just itched to pound out a rhythm or two. I love the pics. The piano’s are great. What fun.

As a photographer, I spend several hours a week behind a camera, and about a bazillion hours a week behind a computer. whatever it is, whether it’s sending emails, or preparing contracts, or doing the books, or processing photos, all of it gets done from the same chair. A lot of it gets done to the sound of Bravo reality television, i’m not going to lie. Bravo is a great station to have on when you can’t actually watch what is happening. Because it’s all the same.

But I also spend a ton of time listening to music. Lots and lots of music. Amy and I have a real fondness for mix tapes, or playlists as the cool kids call them. We make them all the time. On road trips we’re each responsible for at least 3 80-minute mix CDs, each in contrasting tone. And Amy’s been making summer mixes for years now, many of which have become legendary among our friends (amy is a little bit brilliant with the mixes). So this year we decided to make it a seasonal tradition, and we both made not only summer mixes, but fall mixes as well.

I’ve been listening to this mix for about a month and I’m not trying to brag or anything, but it’s the best mix ever heard by human ears. As you can see, it was so good, Amy put on a cape and went dancing in the forest.

I thought I’d share it here, so you guys know what I’m listening to while I’m working on your photos. So here it is, my fall mix tape, 2010

1. I was Married Tegan and Sara
2. Sweet Disposition The Temper Trap
3. So Much Trouble Matt Pond PA
4. Shine a Light Wolf Parade
5. Cathedrals Jump Little Children
6. Cataracts Andrew Bird
7. Rootless Tree (Live At Fingertips) Damien Rice
8. The Sun Melpo Mene
9. Perfect Speed 13 & God
10. Sleepyhead Passion Pit
11. I’m Gonna Hate You When You Go Slow Runner
12. Blindsided Bon Iver
13. Stable Song Death Cab For Cutie
14. White Trash Heros Archers of Loaf
15. We Did It When We Were Young The Gaslight Anthem
16. Forever Young Youth Group
17. Spiralling Keane
18. MoneyGrabber Fitz & The Tantrums
19. Sleepyhead (Stripped Down Version) Passion Pit

Gentle Readers, the mix is so good, It would be a crime for you not to hear it. So, I created a play list for it on Grooveshark, so you can hear the whole thing for free, here.

And if you love it so much you have to have it on your ipod, I’ve also created an iTunes iMix for you.

Give it a listen, and let me know what you think. And hey, while you’re on Gooveshark, why don’t you make a fall mix tape of your own, and send it our way. You’ll need a free Grooveshark account to create a playlist, but it’s free. Be kind, share the love. Once you have your perfect fall mix ready to go, Just share your playlist and send me the link. I’ll post links to anyone who sends one along so we can all get in on the fall music goodness.

Back in June I was approached by a classical music group in town called Revel about doing some photography for their upcoming season. Revel is made up of cellist Joe Becktell and pianist Carla MCElhaney, and they have a unique, and if you ask me, pretty cool vision for classical music; to strip away a bunch of the protocol that has been attached to the performance of classical music over the years, and just get back to the pure beauty of the music. If you’ve sat in a symphony hall anytime in your life you probably know exactly what they’re talking about. Everyone sitting stiffly in their chairs, perfectly still, clapping only at certain times, and otherwise staying as still and quiet as possible. For those of us who grew up in that culture it seems pretty normal, but if you’re someone new to classical music, it’s confusing, formal, and stuffy. Three things that music really shouldn’t be.

The audience for classical music around the world isn’t exactly growing. It’s just getting older. That’s a real shame because there is so much amazing music from the past, and music still being written today that doesn’t fit into the mainstream pop culture.

So Revel’s goal is to play classical music without any of unnecessary formalities attached. I really like their vision for exceptional classical music devoid of pretension. They play small intimate chamber concerts in people’s homes and other informal venues. The banner on their website really sums up their intentions: Come as you are, clap when you feel like it, laugh when the music is funny, cry when it’s sad, go barefoot, dance, listen with abandon, get carried away, make up your own story, forget the rules.

I like it!

After a successful opening season last year, they are focusing this year on growing their audience and their support base, so they came to me for photos for their 2nd season, which they titled The Growing Season. Perfect. As soon as Carla told me their theme, visions of plants were dancing in my head. Duh. So we headed out to Greengate Farm just east of Austin, to play in the dirt.

If you’re in the Austin area, do yourself a favor and check out the upcoming Revel series of concerts. Maybe we’ll see you there.

On most of my shoots, I use natural light, which means often blowing out the skies. But because of the theme of this shoot, I really wanted to bring in the amazing clouds we had that evening.

The only problem was we were in the middle of the most insane 2-week heat wave and it was like a gillion degrees outside, and no lie, my flash completely overheated and shut down after about 10 shots.

Oh well. Plan B. Back to natural light.

Okay, so last of the vacation photos, before I get back to posting client pictures.

Amy and I spent Christmas with her parents in East Texas. I’ve posted before about their sleepy little town, and how much I love to spend a few days there. The nostalgic Americana thing is so thick you can taste it. It’s especially nice at the holidays, where there’s lots of time to just hang around in your pajamas, and play games together, and watch old christmas movies, and eat a lot.

This year, I’m not sure exactly what was going on, but at one point Amy and her mom emerged from a back room with a ton of fabulous old cloths. This amazing Faux-fur coat, and pretty awesome cape, some lovely gloves. I’d of course brought my camera along, because I really wanted to get back in the East Texas woods to experiment with this idea I had. When Amy found the fabulous wardrobe stash, she suddenly was really into the idea of doing a shoot for fun. So off we went. It’s pretty great to be married to someone who’s willing to model any time I want her to. And she must have been feeling super inspired by the clothes, because she really got her model face on.

So without further commentary, here are some of my favorite shots of Amy’s Christmas glamour shoot.

We started off at this old shack we found.

the light was still a little strong for what I really wanted to do there, but it was about perfect for getting some shots back in the trees, so we hit the road and found a good place to take a little hike.

These were so fun to take! But unfortunately, I’ll never get my mom to give me that black and gray wool cape with the white lining. Her best friend made it in fashion design school back when they were both in college! I did score the vintage French calfskin gloves–so, I’m not complaining.

We’ve gone from extreme heat to extreme wet. At least for the area. It’s also been cold. I’ve postponed several shoots lately, some of them more than once in hopes of dryer or at least warmer weather.

The morning of James’ shoot, it looked like another postponement was in the cards. Fortunately, the rain stopped just long enough for us to get a couple of hours of shooting.

James is a singer/songwriter from the Dallas area who needed to get some publicity stills. We took him out to an old VW junkyard in town. I have a big soft spot in my heart for VWs, which I hope I wasn’t projecting onto James. The rainy, cloudy day turned out to be perfect for some moody shots. old VWs + musician + rain + lighting = magic.

It was pretty cold out there, and everything was soggy, so when we packed it in we went to find some lunch at a wonderfully greasy little diner, and after we stuffed our faces, I made James pose for a couple more.

The sign of a good photographer, I think, is having that discretion to know when a shot is just staring you in the face. James should be thanking you for the greasy diner shots. They are good, solid shots. I love them. The lighting, the texture, the emptiness…..thank you for sharing these with the Interweb. Great work!

I’m crazy about these shots– especially 1 and 6. Also, love the diner shots.
Maybe we’ll see these on James’ next CD…

We went to B Sterling Band CD release party last weekend, and I took my camera along to get some live photos to go with the publicity stills we did the week before. Momo’s was a little tricky to shoot, because the audience is right up on the stage, and the whole left side of the stage is right up against the wall of the venue, so you can really only shoot from left and front left of stage. Still, I had a great time.

The show was awesome. the sound at Momo’s is always so good, and the band was just great. If you missed it, well, check their calendar on their website and find another show soon. You won’t be sorry.

Last weekend I did a publicity shoot for B. Sterling Band. It was sort of a classic band moment. It was early Saturday morning after ACL, so everyone was running late, including me, and then someone had to be somewhere in an hour. Plus there was a major storm threatening to pour on us, so we had to work fast. B. had found this strange staircase to nowhere in an empty lot near his house, and he thought it’d be perfect for band photos, so we snagged the door to his spare bedroom, natch, and headed out the door. We managed to get just under 40 minutes of photos before it started raining. So we headed back inside for coffee and breakfast tacos. It rained the rest of the day, and it was glorious.

B. Sterling band is having a CD release party for their new record this Saturday at 9pm at Momo’s, so if you’re in Austin, come check it out.

Here are some of my favorite shots from the day.
